Dancing between the dark and the light…

An interesting morning. First I woke with a sense of peace. Can't remember the last time that happened in the city. Then I stepped out of the house and looked up...greeted by a sky full of visible stars. The next hour was a lesson in the dance between night and day...with this as the finale before I had to go home. Good start to a new month.

April 29, 2020: A Rose is not a Rose

And this morning, I offer you my first rose. I have been puzzled, as I walk, by the difference in timing of the flowers all across the garden displays in my neighborhood. Everything is at least a month ahead this year, yes, but not to be too obvious, a rose is NOT a rose, is not a rose….if you know what I mean. Some have been in full bloom since before Easter. Others, like mine, are just beginning to show their beauty.     In honor of my new pink beauties, I’m going to strive to follow my mother’s advice and bloom where I’m planted. May some new bud of…

Resilience, pandemic style…

Saturday. Along the Anacostia. Honestly, these are words I never thought I would speak so often. But today as I greeted the hazy sunrise all I could think about was resilience. The incredible resilience of nature that you see here. Geese. Fish. Cormorants. And their human partners in creation...like Living Classrooms. Even 5 years ago this was not true. All of this before me reminds me of the times in my own life when I was resilient. Not stubborn. Not willful, but resilient...which I define as strength blended with surrender and cooperation. That's what I need today. How about you? Hope you find what you are looking for today.

The green season is upon us…

Yes. Here we are. It's Friday on Capitol Hill. And raining. And apparently it is also National Arbor Day. Funny, because as I was walking, I was thinking how we are moving into "the green season." Most of the flowering trees have given up their pinks and whites and reds and traded them for fresh bright green leaves. The changes get harder to see now, no more flashy bursts of color that your eye cannot escape. Now you really have to pay attention...everything is more subtle. So I ask, what draws your attention deeper today? Personally, I'm going to have to think about that... and I will just have to…

See the beauty where you can…

Well , hump day is feeling particularly humpish today, and most of the trees have made the transition from flowers to leaves, but this old Japanese weeping cherry is holding on...and looks like it has been holding on for many a year on that city corner. The bark is rough and the bows are gnarled and heavy. There is a split in the middle that shows the weight it carries and has carried and carried. And yet, the blooms are stunning on this grey and somber morning...so I say, see the beauty today where you can. That's what I'll work on today.

March 30, 2020: I Learned it All in the Garden

A lot of advanced geometry going on this morning on the walk...maintaining compassionate spacing in a neighborhood with 19th century sidewalks is becoming a challenge. But then there was this...in my own garden...the tulips bulb planted far too late in a winter that just wouldn't be winter growing happily next to the white flowers that just never stopped growing because of that winter. Oh yes and a cameo by the replanted grocery store hyacinth bulbs. Just proves the world is full of all kinds of beauty from all kinds of places that reacts in all kinds of ways to change.

I am lucky in that our confinement begins in the middle of the blooming season in the neighborhood. So much beauty to be seen. March 21, 2020: The Question’s Answer

And good morning to you (a little late, I know, but there were waffles to make). Greetings from the Anacostia River Trail. #loveinthetimeofcovid #thesebootsweremadeforwalkin Looking back (July 9, 2021): And this was the answer to Joy's question. We walked along the river. It felt very risky to go walk along the river; in some places the sidewalks were narrow...it required leaving the "safe" zone that we had established for ourselves. But it was such a blessing to see something other than buildings. And to see the wide sky. And to see the birds and smell the watery air. March 21, 2020: Question of the Day

And good morning. Where will we walk today, huh, Mom? #lifewithjoy2020 #loveinthetimeofcovid #beaglesofinstagram — in Capitol Hill. Looking back (July 9, 2021): I can see that, by now, this had become the question of the day. Walking around the neighborhood was the only activity that we had. Most days I walked alone, but on weekends, we tried to walk as a household. Joy couldn't believe her good luck, because, up until now, I would have been going to the gym instead. A walk with the three of us was, for her, very exciting. All we could think about though was keep moving, get out of the house. The answer to the question "where"…

These were days of great gratitude for the years of work that…

I haven't had anything to say for a few days, but that doesn't mean that my eyes aren't wide open. I just can't translated what I see into any kind of verbal expression. I am lucky in that our confinement begins in the middle of the blooming season in the neighborhood. So much beauty to be seen.
